Summary

Within criminal justice settings, staff supervision, as a distinct area of practice and expertise, has been largely overlooked with little research published in this area.This chapter considers the role of supervision in facilitating staff learning and development, staff wellbeing and resilience and the role of supervision in the maintenance of practice standards.To examine the ways in which effective supervision can be delivered, the supervisory working alliance and supervisor skills and competence are described and reviewed. A developmental model is outlined to with reference to the ways in which supervisee needs and goals change over time, and a framework for structuring each supervision session is provided.Specific attention is given to group supervision, barriers to supervision and to boundary issues that can arise in practice and the role of supervision in addressing these. The chapter concludes with some thoughts on the evidence based and directions for future research.
