Abstract

Abstract

This conversation emerged from a frustration shared by an anthropologist and a historian regarding the naturalized reflex that many social scientists reveal when discussing the middle classes in Latin America as a research topic. In this conversa, we propose exploring how the study of the middle classes and the use of this category as a historical construct provides a fruitful perspective for understanding the multiple and diverse forms of power and domination, challenging certain hegemonic interpretations. We elaborate three main problematizations for discussion: the personal as a political conjuncture, to see why the middle classes became a research interest for us; a historiographical-methodological approach as a possibility for rethinking the binary understanding of power in the region; and the historical-political as a way to include intersectional, relational, and interdisciplinary methodologies to understand the formation of the middle classes as part of larger historical processes.
