Summary

Globally the most cited sociologist today, Pierre Bourdieu laid the foundations for an enduring intellectual legacy. This chapter explores Bourdieu’s legacy in terms of his career, his innovative and distinctive conceptual framework, his broad multidisciplinary appeal, his enduring contributions, and frequently voiced criticisms.

David L. Swartz is author of the American Sociological Association History of Sociology Section 2014 award-winning book: Symbolic Power, Politics, and Intellectuals: The Political Sociology of Pierre Bourdieu (University of Chicago Press). He is a researcher in the Department of Sociology at Boston University and Senior Editor and Book Review Editor for Theory and Society. His research interests include social theory, education, culture, stratification, and political sociology. He is currently studying divisions between American academic conservatives who support the Trump presidency and those who do not.
