Appendix B Costs and Benefits of Activism Scale

(Used with permission from Conner et al., Reference Conner, Crawford and Galioto2023)

Answer choices on a seven-point Likert scale range from strongly disagree to strongly agree. The two parts of the scale should be summed separately and can stand alone or be studied in relationship to other measures of well-being.

The Political Costs of Activism (adapted from Smith et al., Reference Milman and Smith2019)

  1. 1. I have felt tired as a result of my activism.

  2. 2. I have felt depressed as a result of my activism.

  3. 3. I have lost sleep because of my activism.

  4. 4. I have felt hopeless as a result of my activism.

  5. 5. I have felt guilty for not doing enough in my activism.

  6. 6. My activism has created problems for me with my family.

  7. 7. My activism has created problems for me with my peers.

  8. 8. My activism has created problems for me with academics/school work.

  9. 9. My activism has created problems for me with the police.

  10. 10. I have experienced harassment due to my activism.

  11. 11. I have experienced identity-based discrimination due to my activism.

  12. 12. I have had traumatic experiences due to my activism.

The Political Benefits of Activism (adapted from Oosterhoff et al. [62])
