Acknowledgments
This book was written mainly during the time of the worldwide pandemic, which made travel difficult or impossible. Inevitably, the airing of research results that I would normally aim for in lectures and in conference appearances was curtailed. Nevertheless, it is a pleasure for me to thank colleagues and friends who have, sometimes under trying circumstances, cheerfully offered advice on and criticism of earlier drafts of this book. In particular, I would like to thank Hugh Benson, Justin Broakes, Rafael Ferber, and Melissa Lane, who read portions of the book and made many astute comments and suggestions. I do not think for a moment that any of these scholars would agree with much of what I have written, but I would like to believe that as a result of reading my work they are at least slightly more inclined to see Plato’s ethics in a systematic light. I want to single out Anthony Price, who read the entire manuscript with a critical, though sympathetic eye, and who saved me from many errors. Probably, Anthony will mildly regret not having been able to save me from many more. I would also like to thank two anonymous readers for Cambridge University Press, who made helpful suggestions both structural and substantive. Most readers of this book will know how time-consuming such work can be when done properly. This work was completed with the generous assistance of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). The indexes were expertly prepared by Rachel O’Keefe.
