Summary

Particulars of account of Robert of Campsall, king's clerk of works at the palace of Westminster and the Tower of London, for his receipts and expenditure on building works, including expenditure on timber and lead, beginning in Exchequer year 25 Edward III. The heading states that the roll runs to 25 Aug. 1354. Currently, however, it ends at Michaelmas 1352, suggesting that membranes have been lost; Campsall's account for the missing period is summarized in E 372/201, rot. 37 m. 2 (no. 51).

Physical description: A roll of 27 membranes, sewn end-to-end, written on one side mm.1–25, and on both sides on mm. 26d–27d; generally in good condition and wholly legible, but minor staining on mm. 1–4, 13, 17, minor tearing on mm. 1–5 and the sewing partly undone at the join of mm. 12–13.

Scope of transcription: Expenditure on St Stephen's chapel has been transcribed, together with an account for timber (for its uses, see no. 51, rot. 37d m. 1d). Unidentified building work has been omitted, notably at the beginning of the roll. Receipts have been included where they refer to work on the chapel: to William Herland, for the stalls (see no. 41, m. 1), and to William of Patrington, for sculpture (summary, m. 27d).
