Summary

Counter-roll of Hugh Herland, king's carpenter and controller for the expenditure of John Godmanstone, the king's clerk of works at the palace of Westminster, including for the construction of a bell-tower, and of a porch and steps to St Stephen's chapel, from the cloister, with a store account.

Physical description: A roll of six membranes, sewn end-to-end, with the store account on mm. 3d–6d; in good condition and wholly legible; endorsements on m. 1d in a modern hand, ‘18 & 19 Rich 2nd’, ‘Opera Palacij Westm’ and ‘extracts prov[ided from] this roll publish[ed] in Smith's St Stephen's chap[el]’. Not organized by date, but by category of material purchased, followed by the wages paid to each category of worker, and then task work; store account at end.

Provenance: Having strayed out of the crown records, the roll was acquired by the British Museum in 1882.1

Scope of transcription: Expenses relating to the bell-tower, a porch and steps to the chapel, and lodges, and extracts from the store account relating to the same steps.
