Summary

Account roll (compotus) of William Hannay, the king's clerk for the construction of a dwelling for the vicars choral of St Stephen's college, for his receipts and expenditure on the same. The starting date for this roll, on 25 June, is unusual; it was not determined by the financial year, or by the tenure of the clerk of works. It could be explained, however, by the resumption of personal rule by Richard II from the ‘continual council’ in May 1389. We have therefore taken 13 and 18 Richard II to be regnal, rather than Exchequer years.

Physical description: A roll of one membrane; in a crumpled but reasonable condition and wholly legible; in an original leather pouch (fig. 5).

The expenditure section is not organized by date, but by categories of materials purchased, followed by a list of workers employed on specific tasks, and then a further section of items purchased.

Scope of transcription: Transcribed in full.
