Summary

Particulars of account of Robert of Campsall, the king's clerk of works at the palace of Westminster and Tower of London, for his receipts and expenditure on building works at Westminster and the Tower, and a store account. They include building for the new wool staple, to the north of the outer ward.

Physical description: A roll of seven membranes, sewn end-to-end; stained with gall on mm. 1, 2d, but otherwise in reasonable condition and wholly legible; written on one side, except for the store account on mm. 2d–4d. Unusually the roll does not comprise weekly lists of wages and materials purchased, organized chronologically. Rather, it lists first materials purchased, organized by category (timber, stone, iron, etc.), and covers the whole period. These purchases are followed by wages, organized by type of workmen, giving only their names and the numbers of days that they worked over the same period. At the end is the store account of materials used and the inventory of items remaining.

Scope of transcription: Of the receipts, only the total and one entry relating specifically to the chapel have been included. Only materials purchased, wages paid and usage of materials relating to St Stephen's chapel or the college buildings, by the court of the earl of Kent, have been transcribed.
