Managing Editor
Cambridge University Press is looking to appoint a part-time freelance managing editor to provide administrative and peer review support to aid the day-to-day management of the Cambridge Forum series of journals.
Each journal in the Cambridge Forum series publishes four or more themed collections every year. The managing editor will play a central role in ensuring an efficient, consistent and rigorous peer review process across all issues, and in facilitating the smooth running of the journals more generally. The managing editor will serve as the primary point of contact and guidance for authors and guest editors and will provide administrative support to the journals’ Editors-in-Chief.
The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate exceptional organisational skills, will have a native or near-native command of English, and will have experience of working with online peer review systems such as ScholarOne.
The Managing Editor’s responsibilities will include:
- Overseeing the email inbox for each journal.
- Acting as peer review administrator for each Cambridge Forum title, using the ScholarOne online submission system; ensuring that the ScholarOne sites and peer review processes are set up and managed consistently across all titles in the series and in line with series policies and best practice.
- Liaising with Editors-in-Chief, guest editors, authors and reviewers to ensure that each themed collection is set up and managed efficiently; providing guidance, support and training as necessary; monitoring papers throughout the review process, reminding Guest Editors, Editors-in-Chief, authors and reviewers of actions that are overdue.
- Maintaining a spreadsheet that tracks all themed collection proposals under consideration and all themed collection proposals accepted and in progress for each title in the series; providing monthly updates on the status of all papers in progress.
- Providing support as required for editorial board and other meetings, including preparing reports, arranging and minuting meetings and preparing and circulating papers.
The managing editor will work remotely as a freelance worker and will be paid monthly at a rate of £20/hr up to a maximum of 550 hours per year (approximately 10 hours per week) in the first instance = £11,000. The individual will not be an employee of Cambridge University Press and Assessment.
Interested applicants should send a resume/CV and a brief cover letter detailing their qualifications and interest in the position to Sally Hoffmann, Executive Publisher, Cambridge University Press at sally.hoffmann@cambridge.org, using “Cambridge Forum Managing Editor” as the email subject line. Sally is also able to answer any queries.
The deadline for applications is 27 February 2026
