The Elements series presents work on theoretical and methodological advancements in critical discourse studies (CDS), along with reports on original research which has been carried out from a linguistic perspective. Individual works cluster around topics such as identities in political discourse, (social) media discourses or language, discrimination and conflict. Within these and other topics, we particularly welcome contributions which develop subject areas, e.g. looking at the discourse ‘by’ rather than ‘on’ migrants, or investigating societal conflict in discourses around climate change.
Each Element in the series will be written by a scholar with broad expertise in the field of CDS and specific expertise in the particular topic, methodology or theoretical issue addressed by the Element. Cambridge Elements in Critical Discourse Studies will be analytical and progressive, giving authors space to express their personal expert take on the current state of the art in the field. The series will combine a mixture of leading and emerging voices in the field.
Elements in this series will explore the relationship between discourse and society in any and all aspects and contexts, from a diverse range of methodological perspectives. Areas of interest include but are not limited to:
- Collective identities in political discourse
- Discrimination in institutional discourse
- Media and social media discourses
- Discourses on migration, discourses by migrants
- (Dis)empowerment in healthcare settings
- Critical approaches to corporate communication
- Language, discrimination and conflict
- Ideologies in economics discourse
- Environmental and animal rights discourse
About the editors
Gavin Brookes is Research Fellow and UKRI Future Leader Fellow in the Department of Linguistics and English Language at Lancaster University (UK). His research utilises techniques and approaches from Critical Discourse Studies, Corpus Linguistics and Multimodal Discourse Studies in order to investigate the connection between discourse and social life, particularly in health(care), institutional and media contexts. As well as being series co-editor for Cambridge Elements in Critical Discourse Studies, Gavin sits on the editorial boards of a number of journals and is Associate Editor of the International Journal of Corpus Linguistics (John Benjamins) and Co-Editor of the Corpus and Discourse book series (Bloomsbury).
Veronika Koller is Professor of Discourse Studies in the Department of Linguistics and English Language at Lancaster University (UK). Her research centres on Critical Discourse Studies, employing corpus linguistic, systemic functional linguistics and other approaches to investigate political discourse, business communication and discourses on language, gender and sexuality. She has a special interest in the form and function of metaphor in discourse. Veronika is an editorial board member for various international journals and Associate Editor for the journal Metaphor and Symbol. Next to her academic career, she has experience as a consultant and corporate speaker.
