About the series
Elements in Literature and Objects explores the rich and nuanced relations between textual and material worlds. The volumes in this series ask readers to look at objects with fresh eyes, and to revisit connections between literature, language and things. The ground-breaking research showcased in these elements examines the intricate connections between the verbal and the tangible, thinking through key questions about how material objects are shaped by language and how they, in turn, play a vital role in literary texts.
These accessible, engaging volumes focus either on one type of object or on objects in the work of an author or authors, a literary tradition, a period, or a genre. They show how writers use objects to develop or disrupt narrative structures, and to tackle pressing questions about everything from class to conflict, empire to ecological crisis, and gender. The series ranges across literary periods and regions in order to push at the boundaries of how we understand and think with objects and literature. Each element thinks deeply and ambitiously about the place of materiality within print culture and literary history. Together, they address an extraordinary range of objects, texts and approaches from across history and across the globe.
