In honor of the 100th anniversary of the Federal Arbitration Act, this volume brings together a diverse group of leading scholars and practitioners to celebrate its successes and propose specific reforms. Readers will gain insight into how the Federal Arbitration Act impacts the modern practice of arbitration and how the Supreme Court’s interpretation of the Act undermines its fairness. Focusing on domestic, commercial and consumer, as well as securities and labor and employment arbitration, this book provides a roadmap to enhance the fairness and coherence of the Act. The volume is unique in that it serves as the impetus for a law reform project, with over thirty scholars speaking collectively for improvements to the law. This pilot study is the first formal exploration of the concept of “Organizational Professionalism” (OP) among health system leaders in high-performing healthcare organizations. Semi-structured key informant interviews with 23 leaders from 8 healthcare organizations that were recipients of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award (MBNQA) or Baldrige-based state quality award programs explored conceptualization, operationalization, and measurement of OP. Further exploration and understanding of OP in healthcare organizations has the potential to establish and sustain professional and ethical organizational cultures that bolster trust through the sound implementation of laws, policies, and procedures to support the delivery of high-quality patient care.
Cells of magnetotactic bacteria are used as model systems for studying the magnetic properties of ferrimagnetic nanocrystals. Each individual bacterial strain produces magnetosomes (membrane-bounded magnetic crystals) that have distinct sizes, shapes, crystallographic orientations and spatial arrangements, thereby providing nanoparticle systems whose unique magnetic properties are unmatched by synthetic chemically-produced crystals. Here, we use off-axis electron holography in the transmission electron microscope to study the magnetic properties of isolated and closely-spaced bullet-shaped magnetite (Fe3O4) magnetosomes biomineralized by the following magnetotactic bacterial strains: the cultured Desulfovibrio magneticus RS-1 and the uncultured strains LO-1 and HSMV-1. These bacteria biomineralize magnetite crystals whose crystallographic axes of elongation are parallel to <100> (RS-1 and LO-1) or <110> (HSMV-1). We show that the individual magnetosome crystals are single magnetic domains and measure their projected in-plane magnetization distributions and magnetic dipole moments. We use analytical modelling to assess the interplay between shape anisotropy and the magnetically preferred <111> magneto-crystalline easy axis of magnetite.
Johannesburg was still a brash mining town, better known for the production of wealth than knowledge, and the University of the Witwatersrand a mere ten years old when, in 1932, these ten lectures were delivered under the auspices of the University Philosophical Society. They portrayed the ideas of the university's leading academics of the day, and the programme of lectures reveals a studied effort to introduce an element of bipartisan political representation between English and Afrikaner in South Africa by including Wits' first principal, Jan Hofmeyr, and politician, D.F. Malan, as discussion chairs. Yet, no black intellectuals were represented and, indeed, the politics of racial segregation bursts through the text only in a few of the contributions. For the most part, race is alluded to only in passing. As Saul Dubow explains in his new introduction to this re-issue of the lectures, Our Changing World-View was an occasion for Wits' leading faculty members to position the young university as a mature institution with a leadership role in public affairs. Above all, it was a means to project the university as a research as well as a teaching institution, led by a vigorous and ambitious cohort of liberal-minded intellectuals. That all were male and white will be immediately apparent to readers of this reissued volume. Ranging from economics, psychology, a spurious rebuttal of evolution to a substantial revisionist history and the perils of the 'machine age', this book is a sombre reflection of intellectual history and the academy's role in promulgating political and social divisions in South Africa.
Medical schools must insure that the learning environment for medical students promotes the development of explicit and appropriate professional attributes (attitudes, behaviors, and identity) in their medical students.

Professionalism and professional standards in medicine are an active domain of discourse today. The reasons are many. Public concern over the sheer cost of medical care and the growth of un-insurance are daily news fare as are questions about patient safety and quality of care. Concern about how advances in biomedical science will be put to use are also visible.
The definition and meaningfulness of “professionalism” are also open for discussion. Sociologists have described professions as learned (highly knowledgeable) and self-regulating domains of work. Others have described professionalism as values-based domains of competency, or the moral core of medicine. Many approaches to education and training in professionalism are also apparent. Organizational and programmatic experimentation has been fueled by residency program requirements for education in professionalism endorsed by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), and explicit attention to this area of education by the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) and the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). Some state associations of medical schools, for example, the Associated Medical Schools of New York, have seized the initiative and formed “learning networks” to pursue curriculum and organizational development in this domain.
In the explosion of literature focused on educating for professionalism, much expository text has been devoted to exploring the various qualities of “the good physician.”

Many healthcare workers have frequent household contact with persons at high risk for influenza-related complications. Educating healthcare workers about the risk of domestic transmission of influenza may improve their acceptance of influenza vaccination. Concerns regarding vaccine efficacy and safety also need to be addressed.
