The high carrier concentrations typically reported for nanowire devices indicate that when Schottky barrier transport is present, it occurs in the thermionic field emission regime with a substantial but not exclusive tunneling component. Analysis by thermionic field emission is difficult due to its multivariate nature. In recent work, we developed a mathematical stability approach that greatly simplified the evaluation of the multivariate thermionic field emission parameters. This is a general method with potentially wide applicability, requiring only the effective mass m* and relative dielectric constant εr for a given semiconductor as inputs. In the present work, we investigate the influence of the materials properties effective mass m* and relative dielectric constant εr on stability for a range of real and simulated semiconductor nanowires. A further investigation of temperature sensitivity and regime trends is presented.

A new three-dimensional cell shape index using the AFM height images of cells cultured on cell substrates was defined. The new cell shape index revealed quantitative cell spreading information of cells that is not included in the conventional cell shape index. The quantitative morphometry of rat cerebral cortical astrocytes cultured on four different kinds of cell substrates were investigated using the conventional and the new cell shape index, and the results were compared. The new cell shape index showed the quantitative astrocyte spreading and stellation behavior that agrees with the AFM height images of astrocytes.

The real-time electronic performance of a gallium nitride nanowire-based field effect transistor was investigated at five-minute intervals over thirty minutes of continuous irradiation by Xenon-124 relativistic heavy ions. An initial current surge that resulted in device improvement rather than device failure was observed. The current surge, and subsequent electronic behavior, was modeled using a combined thermionic emission-tunnelling approach, leading to information about barrier height, carrier concentrations, expected temperature behavior, and tunnelling.

Astrocytes are cellular bridges between the neurons and capillaries in the blood brain barrier. It was recently suggested that the nanophysical properties of the basement membrane of the blood brain barrier can influence astrocyte and neuron responses. In this work, cerebral cortical astrocytes were cultured on standard poly-L-Lysine coated glass substrates, Aclar substrates, and electrospun polyamide nanofibers whose properties may recapitulate those of the basement membrane. The nanoscale elasticity of each culture environment was investigated by force curve analysis and compared. The elasticity of the individual nanofibers on nanofibrillar surfaces was also investigated. Finally, variations in elasticity of scaffolds were correlated with astrocyte responses.

The nanoscale physical properties of newly electrospun polyamide nanofibrillar matrices < 1 year old versus those that were > 3 year old were investigated with transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction, contact angle measurements, and Raman spectroscopy. Significant differences in crystallinity, hydrophobicity, and chemistry were found and correspondingly different cell responses by cerebellar granular neurons were observed. The properties of the aged nanofibrillar scaffolds evoked a response for neuron burrowing into a more 3-dimensional environment in addition to better facilitation of neurite outgrowth. The nanophysical properties of tissue scaffolds have been recently shown to directly and indirectly regulate cellular responses. As physical properties can evolve over time, the present investigation addresses the issue of tissue scaffold shelf life, with possible changes in directive signals to cells.

We report evidence for graphene layer rearrangements in heavy ion interactions with carbon onions at 140 MeV and 70 MeV per nucleon kinetic energies. Graphene layer rearrangements have been recently predicted in spherical and cylindrical multi-layer graphene systems. The implications of graphene layer rearrangement on the tribological performance of multi-layer nano-carbons in extreme environments are discussed.

Long distance intercellular communication between astrocytes on nanofibrillar and planar surfaces was investigated by epi-fluorescence microscopy and atomic force microscopy. We found that astrocytes on nanofibrillar surfaces and astrocytes on planar surfaces diverged in apparent cell-cell contact structures. Astrocytes on nanofibrillar surfaces exhibited a “single cellular process” response, while astrocytes on planar surfaces exhibited a filopodial network response. The possibility that astrocytes can sense their geometrical environment and form different cell-to-cell contacts on nanofibrillar versus planar surfaces, with activation of different signaling pathways, is discussed.

Growth orientation and type of internal structures are both observed to change abruptly as a function of growth temperature in catalyst free growth of gallium nitride nanowires. In the present work, corresponding temperature-dependent changes in the growth matrix substrate that can affect the availability of nucleation sites and influence the reactivity of constituent adatom materials in catalyst-free nanowire growth are investigated. The influence of Ga vapor pressure and an abrupt change in the availability of single versus molecular adatom constituents is identified as a possible controlling parameter.

Recent research indicates that nanophysical properties as well as biochemical cues can influence cellular re-colonization of a tissue scaffold. It has also been shown nanoscale elasticity can strongly influence cellular responses. In the present work, quantitative investigations of the elasticity of a nanofibrillar matrix scaffold that has demonstrated promise for spinal cord injury repair are compared with complementary transmission electron microscopy investigations, performed to assess nanofiber internal structures. Interpretive model improvements are identified and discussed.

The evolution of carbon onion structure from spherical to polyhedral is correlated with changes in the sp3/sp2 ratio as a function of increasing synthesis temperature using electron energy loss spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and high resolution electron microscopy. Results that are obtained using asymmetric f-variance versus symmetric Gaussian deconvolution of electron energy loss spectra are compared. The possibility of a separate peak at 287 eV is discussed.
