Published in conjunction with the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, the IMS Monographs are concise research monographs of high quality on any branch of statistics or probability of sufficient interest to warrant publication as books. Some will concern relatively traditional topics in need of up-to-date assessment. Others will be on emerging themes. In all cases the objective will be to provide a balanced view of the field.

  • Self-similar Markov trees form a remarkable family of random compact real trees equipped with a decoration function that is positive on the skeleton, encompassing the Brownian continuum random tree, stable Lévy trees, fragmentation trees, and growth-fragmentation trees. In this book, the authors develop a consistent and unified theory of self-similar Markov trees by bringing together and vastly generalizing results that had been scattered across the random tree literature over several decades. They begin with in-depth coverage of the construction of self-similar Markov trees, then address the study of self-similar Markov trees in the continuous. In Part II, the authors build on this material and introduce readers to current research. They establish general invariance principles for Galton–Watson trees with integer types and illustrate them through numerous combinatorial classes of random trees that have appeared in the literature.

  • A graduate-level introduction to advanced topics in Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC), as applied broadly in the Bayesian computational context. The topics covered have emerged as recently as the last decade and include stochastic gradient MCMC, non-reversible MCMC, continuous time MCMC, and new techniques for convergence assessment. A particular focus is on cutting-edge methods that are scalable with respect to either the amount of data, or the data dimension, motivated by the emerging high-priority application areas in machine learning and AI. Examples are woven throughout the text to demonstrate how scalable Bayesian learning methods can be implemented.   • Bringing together years of research into one useful resource, this text empowers the reader to creatively construct their own dependence models. Intended for senior undergraduate and postgraduate students, it takes a step-by-step look at the construction of specific dependence models, including exchangeable, Markov, moving average and, in general, spatio-temporal models. All constructions maintain a desired property of pre-specifying the marginal distribution and keeping it invariant. They do not separate the dependence from the marginals and the mechanisms followed to induce dependence are so general that they can be applied to a very large class of parametric distributions. All the constructions are based on appropriate definitions of three building blocks: prior distribution, likelihood function and posterior distribution, in a Bayesian analysis context. All results are illustrated with examples and graphical representations. Applications with data and code are interspersed throughout the book, covering fields including insurance and epidemiology.

  • While the Poisson distribution is a classical statistical model for count data, the distributional model hinges on the constraining property that its mean equal its variance. This text instead introduces the Conway-Maxwell-Poisson distribution and motivates its use in developing flexible statistical methods based on its distributional form. This two-parameter model not only contains the Poisson distribution as a special case but, in its ability to account for data over- or under-dispersion, encompasses both the geometric and Bernoulli distributions. The resulting statistical methods serve in a multitude of ways, from an exploratory data analysis tool, to a flexible modeling impetus for varied statistical methods involving count data. Stable Lévy Processes via Lamperti-Type Representations

  • Stable Lévy processes lie at the intersection of Lévy processes and self-similar Markov processes. Processes in the latter class enjoy a Lamperti-type representation as the space-time path transformation of so-called Markov additive processes (MAPs). This completely new mathematical treatment takes advantage of the fact that the underlying MAP for stable processes can be explicitly described in one dimension and semi-explicitly described in higher dimensions, and uses this approach to catalogue a large number of explicit results describing the path fluctuations of stable Lévy processes in one and higher dimensions. Written for graduate students and researchers in the field, this book systemically establishes many classical results as well as presenting many recent results appearing in the last decade, including previously unpublished material. Topics explored include first hitting laws for a variety of sets, path conditionings, law-preserving path transformations, the distribution of extremal points, growth envelopes and winding behaviour.

  • The case-control approach is a powerful method for investigating factors that may explain a particular event. It is extensively used in epidemiology to study disease incidence, one of the best-known examples being Bradford Hill and Doll's investigation of the possible connection between cigarette smoking and lung cancer. More recently, case-control studies have been increasingly used in other fields, including sociology and econometrics. With a particular focus on statistical analysis, this book is ideal for applied and theoretical statisticians wanting an up-to-date introduction to the field. It covers the fundamentals of case-control study design and analysis as well as more recent developments, including two-stage studies, case-only studies and methods for case-control sampling in time.   • We live in a new age for statistical inference, where modern scientific technology such as microarrays and fMRI machines routinely produce thousands and sometimes millions of parallel data sets, each with its own estimation or testing problem. Doing thousands of problems at once is more than repeated application of classical methods. Taking an empirical Bayes approach, Bradley Efron, inventor of the bootstrap, shows how information accrues across problems in a way that combines Bayesian and frequentist ideas. Estimation, testing and prediction blend in this framework, producing opportunities for new methodologies of increased power. New difficulties also arise, easily leading to flawed inferences.   • This book introduces in a systematic manner a general nonparametric theory of statistics on manifolds, with emphasis on manifolds of shapes. The theory has important and varied applications in medical diagnostics, image analysis, and machine vision. An early chapter of examples establishes the effectiveness of the new methods and demonstrates how they outperform their parametric counterparts. Inference is developed for both intrinsic and extrinsic Fréchet means of probability distributions on manifolds, then applied to shape spaces defined as orbits of landmarks under a Lie group of transformations - in particular, similarity, reflection similarity, affine and projective transformations. In addition, nonparametric Bayesian theory is adapted and extended to manifolds for the purposes of density estimation, regression and classification. Ideal for statisticians who analyze manifold data and wish to develop their own methodology, this book is also of interest to probabilists, mathematicians, computer scientists, and morphometricians with mathematical training.
