OVIPOSITION OF THE GALL MIDGE CYSTIPHORA SONCHI (BREMI) (DIPTERA: CECIDOMYIIDAE) VIA THE STOMATA OF PERENNIAL SOWTHISTLE (SONCHUS ARVENSIS L.)

Abstract

Cystiphora sonchi (Bremi) females, fixed while ovipositing into leaves of perennial sowthistle (Sonchus arvensis L.), were sectioned and then examined with a light microscope. Sections revealed that this gall-inducing species oviposited into leaves of sowthistle via the stomatal openings of the lower epidermis. Furthermore, sections of eggs and surrounding leaf tissues indicated that the epidermis was not punctured during oviposition.

Résumé

On a fixé et sectionné des femelles de Cystiphora sonchi (Bremi) en train de pondre dans les feuilles du laiteron des champs, Sonchus arvensis L., et on les a examinées au microscope. Les sections ont révélé que cette espèce cécidogène pond dans les feuilles du laiteron par l’ouverture des stomates de l’épidémie du dessous. De plus, des sections des oeufs et du feuillage environnant indiquent que l’épidémie n’est pas transpercé durant la ponte.
