Summary

Everyone who has contributed data, made a monetary donation, volunteered their time and energy, has made this organization the success that it is. We “stand on the shoulders of giants” – that came before us and built the foundation. … Without all of these people, the AAVSO would not exist.

– Arne A. Henden, 2007

From September 2003 to March 2005, the AAVSO was without a director but was not rudderless as a result of the services of Elizabeth Waagen, who served as Janet Mattei's trusted senior technical assistant for many years. With careful attention from the AAVSO Council, Waagen maintained the business while the Council selected the next director for the Association.

In the first years after the appointment of Arne A. Henden as director, the Association displayed an outburst of activity in robotic observing, modernization of its database of observations, improvement of tools for observers, and general Internet presence. The variable star science community and amateur participation in the science benefited worldwide from these improvements. This chapter summarizes a few of the key developments in the AAVSO over this period. However, evaluation of the dramatic evolution that has taken place since Henden assumed the role of AAVSO Director will, of necessity, require historical perspective that at this early date would be impossible.
