Starting points
• Students are increasingly asking for advice on skills relating to studying and writing. Some international students may come from an education system with different expectations. New and mature students may feel uncertain about their existing skills.
• Many universities have student advice centres that create or recommend their own materials, including apps. The resources listed below cover the key topics of Presentation skills, Time management and Writing. Other good sources are in the Courses and Qualifications chapter as general study skills resources are often available. Other related topics include Citing, Referencing and Plagiarism and Literature Searching .

Presentation skills
Students may need to prepare for group presentations and seminars and PhD and early career researchers for posters or lectures. These resources link to general guides on public speaking and presentations. Ask your local IT support about availability and training on specific tools such as PowerPoint or Prezi.

A management training organisation whose website offers free access to a suite of practical tips, guidance and app recommendations covering a range of skills, including time management for increasing effectiveness at work and study. Subscribers have full access to online training.
Writing skills
Students who ask about style guides often require advice on Citing, Referencing and Plagiarism. They can be referred to the sources listed in that chapter.
