N.B. The brief descriptions here are based on the full physical descriptions preceding each Heft in the German edition. All Hefte are understood to be in the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin—Preussischer Kulturbesitz, except for Hefte 1 and 95, which are in the Beethoven-Haus, Bonn.
Virtually all of the Hefte, except for 1 and 95, bear either annotations or an inserted slip by Anton Schindler or Alexander Wheelock Thayer. Most Hefte also contain librarians’ cataloging numbers, often in ink.
Many of these originally blank booklets have paper shields pasted on to the exterior of the front covers (probably standard at the time of manufacture) for the purchaser to write a title, date, or some other identifier.
First surviving Heft after a 22-month break:
Heft 17 (ca. May 27, 1822 – ca. June 12/13, 1822): 25 Blatter; except for Blätter 17v and 18v, all the pages contain writing. Format 20.1 x 12.6 cm. N.B. Hefte with slight format change and fewer pages begin here.
Another 5-month break:
Heft 18 (ca. October 31/November 1, 1822 – November 4, 1822): 27 Blätter; all the pages contain writing. Probably Schindler's first authentic surviving entry (Blatt 16r; November 4, 1822). Format between 19.7 x 12.1 cm. and 20.6 x 12.0 cm.
Another 2½-month break:
Heft 19 (January 19, 1823 – January 26, 1823): 35 Blätter; except for Blatt 30v, all the pages contain writing. Heft 20 interrupts Heft 19. Format between 19.1 x 12.0 cm. and 19.8 x 11.9 cm.
Heft 20 (January 21, 1823 – January 26, 1823): 26 Blätter; all the pages contain writing. Schindler missed foliating two Blätter; later numbered by an unknown hand. This Heft fits chronologically within Heft 19. Format 19.5 x 11.5 cm.
Heft 21 (January 27, 1823 – January 30, 1823): 16 Blätter; all the pages contain writing. Format between 19.2 x 12.4 cm. and 19.5 x 12.5 cm.
Heft 22 (January 30, 1823 – February 6, 1823): 63 Blätter; except for Blatt 1v, all the pages contain writing. Schindler missed foliating two Blätter; later numbered by an unknown hand. Format 18.7 x 11.6 cm. N.B. Smaller format.
