The following text is transcribed from a letter from the provost, bailies, and council of Edinburgh, to the sheriff and council of Haddington. In it, the council reiterates to their counterparts in Haddington the order of precedence in processions for the various incorporated trades.
‘Till all and syndry quhais knawlege thir p[rese]nt l[ett]ers sall to cum And in speciall to ye ryt honoraibill shref off haidinton bailʒes counsel & communite of ye samin The p[ro]vest bailʒes counsel of ye brouch of Edinburgh greeting Sene meid and meritabill thing is to bere lele and suchfast witnessing to ye vate and specialie in caus or causis qr throw ye conceling of the vate preiudice or schaith may be ingenerit to ye innocent theirfor it is to ʒr universate we maik it knawn that it is ye lovaible use and ordour observit and keipit wytin yis towne amangs the craftsmen in ye passing in p[ro]cession on corps cristi day the octavis yreftir And all uthir generall processionis and gathererings yt is to say that hail brethers of hamyrmen of all kynd off sorts to giddr wyt ye masons wrychts glasinvrychts and payntrs passis all to giddr wyt yr baneris nixt the sacrame[n]t And nixt yair befor passis the baxstars The thred craft befor yai is the wobstars & waikars to gide[r] The ferd is ye tailʒrs The fift place befor ye sacrame[n]t is ye cordanars The sixt place is ye skynars and furrours The vij place befor ye sacrame[n]t passis ye barbour The viij place qlk is ye formest place passand befor ye p[ro]cession is ye fleshars & candillmaikars And this is ye ordour keipit wichtin yis toun amang ye craftsmen in all p[ro]cessions and gatherings The qlk to yow we maik it manifestly knawn be thir pnts subscrivit wyt our common scrives hand At Edinburgh ye xxvij day of maij ye ʒeir of god ane thousand five hundreth thretty twa ʒeirs
