Constancy is the way we take a stand so that some aspects of the world show up as mattering to us in particular ways. We take a stand by pressing into a certain understanding of ourselves that polarizes the world. The fact that we always have taken a stand one way or another makes it possible for Dasein to be a self, or to fail to be a self (see Selfhood).
