This part begins with a discussion of the state of affairs in Galicia in the early thirteenth century before going on to discuss the details of Hungarian and Polish expansion in the Galician region and the chain of events that led to the coronation of Prince Coloman, second son of the Hungarian monarch, Andrew II (1205–35), as king of Galicia. We will in turn discuss this new royal title, which had not previously been used in the territory, as well as the relative brevity of Coloman's stay in Galicia, and the circumstances of his forced departure around 1221/22.
