Summary

Cytopathological evaluation of central nervous system (CNS) lesions include evaluation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and smears or crushed preparations of specimens submitted as intraoperative consultation following craniotomy or stereotactic CT guided needle biopsy technique. These specimens not only require a good understanding of the general concepts of cytopathology, but also needs an adequate knowledge of various neurological diseases and neuroanatomy. The cytopathologist must be able to correlate the clinical and radiological information and have a good understanding of clinicopathologic entities and their anatomical locations in the CNS.
