Summary

This chapter examines how Momus' revival intersected with the Protestant Reformation. It analyzes Erasmus' translations of Lucian and Luther's attack on Erasmus as a "true Momus" mocking all religion, despite the minimal presence of Momus in Erasmus's works. It also treats a Spanish translation of Alberti's Momus, in which the translator Agustín de Almazán seeks to sanitize the heterodox religious currents in the work, and connects the controversial Cymbalum mundi (attributed to Bonaventure Des Périers) to Alberti's Momus. Finally, the chapter examines the use of Momus in the writings of the Italian satirists Niccolò Franco and Anton Francesco Doni.
