Summary

In recent years Hartmann von Aue's first Arthurian romance, Erec, may be said to have gravitated towards the centre of interest of medieval German studies. This is evinced by no less than three editions. The first of these was the seventh, revised edition, by Kurt Gärtner, in the Altdeutsche Textbibliothek series, which takes into account the discovery in 2004, in Zwettl, of fragments of a new Erec text, like Hartmann's romance a translation from Chrétien de Troyes's Erec et Enide, but entirely independent of Hartmann (and inferior to his adaptation). This has not been considered in this edition. The other two recent editions are both accompanied by parallel text translations into New High German, and extensive commentaries. A student-oriented introduction has also appeared. Hartmann now has a journal dedicated to him. There is moreover an ever-growing website, with an Erec ‘portal’, which gives the user free access to facsimiles of the majority of the manuscripts of Erec. For the English reader, A Companion to the Works of Hartmann von Aue, edited by Francis G. Gentry, Studies in German Literature, Linguistics and Culture (Rochester, NY: Camden House, 2005), provides an excellent introduction, and W. H. Jackson's monograph, Chivalry in Twelfth-Century Germany: The Works of Hartmann von Aue.
