Summary

It seems a reasonable assumption that the choices of texts copied by readers into miscellanies reflect their interests. If these copyists also illustrated their miscellanies, we may think the same of their iconographic choices. What is more, their illustrations can reveal the ways in which they perceived and interpreted the monuments and the works of art in which they found inspiration. The latter can help us in understanding the role of images in the assimilation of knowledge and the formation of ideas. If the illustrations were drawn by young copyists, we may even draw conclusions as to how these illustrations might have contributed to their development into full-adult citizens.
