Summary

What Is PubMed? PubMed is a service of the U.S. National Library of Medicine. It is a search engine that allows you to find articles on biomedical topics from more than 15 million citations dating back to the 1950s. Articles are from journals in the medline database and other life science journals.

Why use it? On any given day, you will be faced with questions about how to best manage your patients on the wards. To apply evidence-based medicine, you must draw on the literature. PubMed allows you to do this quickly and easily.

How to use it. PubMed is available online though the following link: www.pubmed.com. Often medical schools have a specific link through their library website so that you can link from the PubMed citation to a full-text copy owned by your library.

The PubMed page allows you to type in search terms in an entry field or window. A simple search involves typing terms into the field and hitting “go.” For example, let's say our patient has antiretroviral-resistant HIV infection, a condition we don't know much about. If we enter the keywords “antiretroviral,” “resistant,” and “HIV,” and hit go, we will get back more than 800 citations – an impractically high number of articles to find and read.

Narrowing a search using the “limits” page. Let's say we want to limit our search to just review articles on antiretroviral-resistant HIV.
