The creation of a reasonably correct data set for both House and presidential election results was fairly involved. First, the creation of the House data set will be discussed, and then the presidential data set will be discussed.
House election results: The primary source of data for House results is Michael J. Dubin, United States Congressional Elections, 1788–1997. This contains considerable detail. For the years 2000–2008 results from the official results from the House of Representatives Clerk are used.
Presidential election results: The presidential election results were based largely on two sources. Results from 1952 through 2000 were taken from various Congressional Quarterly (CQ) reference books or reports or other sources such as the Almanac of American Politics for various years. In some years CQ reported the results in March of the year following the presidential election. In other cases CQ published the results in Congressional Districts in the 1980s or Congressional Districts in the 1990s. For a few years the results were available only in editions of Almanac of American Politics. The 2000 results were obtained directly from CQ.
