13 - Reaching out
Summary
You must have anticipated the possible acceptance of your paper. In some cases (20%) you will find your paper very important (already reflected by the journal you have chosen to publish it in). In that case read the next item.
Publicizing your work
Try to get your work in the media. A number of professional organizations have special news sections in their glossy magazines and on their websites.
The best way to get your paper in there is to check the format they use. Write exactly in that format in a very popular way. Have it checked by non-specialized colleagues. Send it in. Do not ask media representatives first if they are interested.
In contacts with reporters try to avoid the service of spokesmen of your institute.
Write a press-release yourself. Have it read by very junior scientists and by a non-scientist. Put any success you have with the media on your website and mention it in your annual reports and grant proposals.
Be sure that all your managers will get to know about your media success.
