Published online by Cambridge University Press: 05 June 2012
Tone is the level and movement of pitch within an intonation unit. Primary tone refers to the system of contrasting movements of pitch within the tonic segment (i.e. tonic syllable and tail); the basic system is a choice between fall (\), rise (/) and fall-rise (∨). Secondary tone refers to variations to the basic primary system and also to levels and movements in the pretonic segment (i.e. pre-head and head).
