A number of large rivers drain the tropics, acting as huge conduits for transferring water and sediment to the oceans. These include the Amazon, Orinoco, Magdalena and Paraná in tropical South America; the Nile, Niger, Congo and Zambezi in Africa; and the Indus, Ganga, Brahmaputra, Irrawaddy and Mekong in tropical South and Southeast Asia. These rivers play a very important role in tropical geomorphology. We review a selected number of large rivers in this chapter to illustrate their importance.
