Summary

Starting with the account of a meeting with an activist in Medinat al-Sadr, this chapter is dedicated to the post-invasion period (2003-2017), and explores the main features of Iraq’s social, economic and political realities and their impact on women’s conditions of life and activism. First, I explore how women political activists experienced the invasion and occupation and how they relate or not to the new regime. Then, I analyze how the context of generalized violence, social, political and economic crisis provoked by the invasion and occupation shape women’s lives and their social and political engagement. Finally, I look particularly at women’s representatives of the new regime and explore how the communalization of Iraqi political system impact their existence and activism.
