On November 17, 1978, while playing a gig in San Diego, an audience member threw a small silver cross onto the stage. Bob Dylan picked it up and put it into his pocket. He was exhausted and physically ill, worn down by an emotionally grueling divorce and demanding world tour. The following night, in Tucson, he was feeling even worse and reached into his pocket, pulled out the cross, and put it on. That night, while stuck inside a hotel room, he felt the overwhelming presence of Jesus. He described the experience a few years later to journalist Karen Hughes
