We present and analyze the simplest single step schemes for the approximation of the solution to an initial value problem: forward and bacward Euler, trapezoidal and midpoint rules, and Taylor’s method. We discuss the notions of consistency error and convergence for these schemes
We introduce the spectral radius of a matrix, and study how it relates to induced matrix norms. We prove Gelfand’s theorem on the spectral radius. We introduce the condition number of a matrix, and use it to provide error estimates for the solution of a linear system under perturbations.
We present finite difference schemes for hyperbolic problems. We begin with the transport equation and show the necessity of a certain type of upwinding and/or numerical diffusion for stability. This is illustrated by analyzing all the classical schemes: upwind, downwind, centered, Lax–Friedrichs, Lax–Wendroff. Beam–Warming, and Crank–Nicolson. We then focus on the topic of positivity and max-norm dissipativity of finite difference schemes. We present and sketch the proof of Godunov’s theorem. A brief discussion of dispersion relations is then carried out. Next, we study schemes for the wave equation, and show how to properly choose the discrete initial velocity to attain the desired consistency. To show stability we employ energy and negative norm arguments. The last section is dedicated to developing schemes for symmetric hyperbolic systems. The most well-known finite difference schemes are presented, and their matrix valued symbols are introduced. The symbol is then used to develop the von Neumann stability analysis for this case.
This chapter is a close companion to the previous one. Here we study the best least squares approximation to periodic functions via trigonometric polynomials. Many of the ideas and results of the previous chapter are repeated in this scenario. They are then expanded to deal with merely square integrable functions. The Fourier transform of periodic functions, and its inverse, is then introduced and studied. Uniform convergence of trigonometric series, under several different smoothness assumptions is then discussed.Trigonometric approximation in periodic Sobolev spaces is then discussed.
This is the second part of a two-part series on the logic of hyperlogic, a formal system for regimenting metalogical claims in the object language (even within embedded environments). Part A provided a minimal logic for hyperlogic that is sound and complete over the class of all models. In this part, we extend these completeness results to stronger logics that are sound and complete over restricted classes of models. We also investigate the logic of hyperlogic when the language is enriched with hyperintensional operators such as counterfactual conditionals and belief operators.
Numerical Analysis is a broad field, and coming to grips with all of it may seem like a daunting task. We prove a strengthened version of Shavrukov’s result on the non-isomorphism of diagonalizable algebras of two $\Sigma _1$-sound theories, based on the improvements previously found by Adamsson. We then obtain several corollaries to the strengthened result by applying it to various pairs of theories and obtain new non-isomorphism examples. In particular, we show that there are no surjective homomorphisms from the algebra $(\mathfrak {L}_T, \Box _T\Box _T)$ onto the algebra $(\mathfrak {L}_T, \Box _T)$. The case of bimodal diagonalizable algebras is also considered. We give several examples of pairs of theories with isomorphic diagonalizable algebras but non-isomorphic bimodal diagonalizable algebras.
In this article we show that bi-intuitionistic predicate logic lacks the Craig Interpolation Property. We proceed by adapting the counterexample given by Mints, Olkhovikov and Urquhart for intuitionistic predicate logic with constant domains [13]. More precisely, we show that there is a valid implication $\phi \rightarrow \psi $ with no interpolant. Importantly, this result does not contradict the unfortunately named ‘Craig interpolation’ theorem established by Rauszer in [24] since that article is about the property more correctly named ‘deductive interpolation’ (see Galatos, Jipsen, Kowalski and Ono’s use of this term in [5]) for global consequence. Given that the deduction theorem fails for bi-intuitionistic logic with global consequence, the two formulations of the property are not equivalent.
Certain instances of contraction are provable in Zardini’s system $\mathbf {IK}^\omega $ which causes triviality once a truth predicate and suitable fixed points are available.
We present a new frame semantics for positive relevant and substructural propositional logics. This frame semantics is both a generalisation of Routley–Meyer ternary frames and a simplification of them. The key innovation of this semantics is the use of a single accessibility relation to relate collections of points to points. Different logics are modeled by varying the kinds of collections used: they can be sets, multisets, lists or trees. We show that collection frames on trees are sound and complete for the basic positive distributive substructural logic $\mathsf {B}^+$, that collection frames on multisets are sound and complete for $\mathsf {RW}^+$ (the relevant logic $\mathsf {R}^+$, without contraction, or equivalently, positive multiplicative and additive linear logic with distribution for the additive connectives), and that collection frames on sets are sound for the positive relevant logic $\mathsf {R}^+$. The completeness of set frames for $\mathsf {R}^+$ is, currently, an open question.
We extend the languages of both basic and graded modal logic with the infinity diamond, a modality that expresses the existence of infinitely many successors having a certain property. In both cases we define a natural notion of bisimilarity for the resulting formalisms, that we dub $\mathtt {ML}^{\infty }$ and $\mathtt {GML}^{\infty }$, respectively. We then characterise these logics as the bisimulation-invariant fragments of the naturally corresponding predicate logic, viz., the extension of first-order logic with the infinity quantifier. Furthermore, for both $\mathtt {ML}^{\infty }$ and $\mathtt {GML}^{\infty }$ we provide a sound and complete axiomatisation for the set of formulas that are valid in every Kripke frame, we prove a small model property with respect to a widened class of weighted models, and we establish decidability of the satisfiability problem.
We investigate an approach for drawing logical inference from inconsistent premisses. The main idea in this approach is that the inconsistencies in the premisses should be interpreted as uncertainty of the information. We propose a mechanism, based on Kinght’s [14] study of inconsistency, for revising an inconsistent set of premisses to a minimally uncertain, probabilistically consistent one. We will then generalise the probabilistic entailment relation introduced in [15] for propositional languages to the first order case to draw logical inference from a probabilistic set of premisses. We will show how this combination can allow us to limit the effect of uncertainty introduced by inconsistent premisses to only the reasoning on the part of the premise set that is relevant to the inconsistency.
Numerical simulation of parametrized differential equations is of crucial importance in the study of real-world phenomena in applied science and engineering. Computational methods for real-time and many-query simulation of such problems often require prohibitively high computational costs to achieve sufficiently accurate numerical solutions. During the last few decades, model order reduction has proved successful in providing low-complexity high-fidelity surrogate models that allow rapid and accurate simulations under parameter variation, thus enabling the numerical simulation of increasingly complex problems. However, many challenges remain to secure the robustness and efficiency needed for the numerical simulation of nonlinear time-dependent problems. The purpose of this article is to survey the state of the art of reduced basis methods for time-dependent problems and draw together recent advances in three main directions. First, we discuss structure-preserving reduced order models designed to retain key physical properties of the continuous problem. Second, we survey localized and adaptive methods based on nonlinear approximations of the solution space. Finally, we consider data-driven techniques based on non-intrusive reduced order models in which an approximation of the map between parameter space and coefficients of the reduced basis is learned. Within each class of methods, we describe different approaches and provide a comparative discussion that lends insights to advantages, disadvantages and potential open questions.
