L'objectif de cet article est de réfléchir, à l'invitation des Annales, sur ma façon d'écrire l'histoire des techniques. Je m'intéresse aux systèmes techniques (qui sont constitués de composants artificiels) et aux systèmes socio-techniques (qui comportent à la fois des composants artinciels et des composants organisationnels). J'utilise un concept de « saillants rentrants » (reverse salients) pour expliquer la manière dont les systèmes évoluent à la fois en synchronie et en diachronie. J'étudie également la nature de la créativité, et spécialement la création de ces systèmes techniques et sociotechniques. Dans mon travail antérieur, je me suis concentré sur les « constructeurs de système », c'est-à-dire ceux qui ont créé ces systèmes techniques. Je m'intéresse actuellement aux constructeurs collectifs qui édifient de gigantesques systèmes socio-techniques. La description de l'évolution de tels systèmes requiert des modèles complexes et formalisés.

Summary

This essay presents an approach to the history of technology which focuses both on technical systems and on sociotechnical systems. The former consist of artifactual components; the latter involve both artifactual and organizational components. A concept of reverse salients is used to explain the way in which systems synchronically and diachronically evolve. The essay also explores the nature of creativity, especially the creation of technical and sociotechnical systems by individual and collective system builders.
