Footnotes

The long-distance movement of Spondylus ornaments, carved from marine shell, across Neolithic Europe, has been for decades a classic case-study in early exchange systems. A necessary preliminary to informed discussion, a secure provenance for Spondylus shell as a natural raw material, has – remarkably – been lacking in the past.
