About the journal

Bilingualism: Language and Cognition is an international peer-reviewed open access journal focusing on bilingualism from a linguistic, psycholinguistic, and neuroscientific perspective. The aims of the journal are to promote research on the bilingual and multilingual person and to encourage debate in the field.
Areas covered include: bilingual language competence, bilingual language processing, bilingual language acquisition in children and adults, bimodal bilingualism, neurolinguistics of bilingualism in normal and brain-damaged individuals, computational modelling of bilingual language competence and performance, and the study of cognitive functions in bilinguals.
The journal maintains an inclusive attitude to research involving all languages, and we specifically encourage the study of less well researched languages (including especially minority and minoritized languages) to increase our understanding of how language and cognition interact in the bilingual individual.

About the Co-Editor role

The outgoing Co-Editor of the journal is Professor Harald Clahsen, who will remain in post until the end of 2025. The prospective Co-Editor will share Editor-in-Chief responsibilities with the BLC Co-Editor Professor Jubin Abutalebi. 

We are looking for a candidate with expertise in experimental linguistics and psycholinguistics and a focus on the linguistic side of bilingualism research. 

Editorial responsibilities

The editorial responsibilities of the Co-Editor will include:

• Shaping the strategic direction of the journal, in cooperation with the other Co-Editor and Cambridge, as well as the BLC Associate Editors.
• Developing and/or updating the journal’s editorial policy, in cooperation with Cambridge and the journal’s other Co-Editor.
• Having overall responsibility (with the other Co-Editor) for the quality and rigour of the content published in the journal.
• Organizing and managing the editorial office (with the other Co-Editor), with support from Cambridge.
• Managing the peer review process using Scholar One system, alongside a team of Associate Editors.
• Managing the peer review process and making final article acceptance decisions on assigned manuscripts.
• Recruiting and engaging with members of the Editorial Board.
• Attending relevant conferences and regular editorial meetings.
• Representing and promoting the journal globally and at international events where the Co-Editor might be in attendance (e.g., workshops, symposia, conferences).
• Commissioning content for submission to the journal and overseeing the journal’s special issue pipeline.

Term

The Co-Editor will serve for an initial 3-year term (2026-2028) starting on 1^st January 2026, with the option of renewing for another term. 

Honorarium and other benefits

The Co-Editor will receive an annual honorarium of £5,000. Cambridge will also reimburse reasonable pre-agreed expenses for journal-related activities (e.g., conference attendance).
