BJPsych International provides psychiatrists and all mental health professionals with an overview of current policy and practice in psychiatry from a global perspective. Our primary mission is to provide a publication platform for authors from low-and-middle-income countries. Published on behalf of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, the journal is entirely open access. We accept peer-reviewed articles dealing with developments in mental health policy, novel approaches to the management of mental health services, and worldwide training in psychiatry. These include original research articles, and systematic reviews and meta-analyses of international relevance. Regular features include thematic papers exploring topical subjects and Global Echoes, a section dedicated to contributions from trainees and junior doctors. As the BJPsych International evolves, we intend to highlight more digital content, such as videos and podcasts to accompany our published articles.

Focus 

Articles published in BJPsych International provide an overview of current topics in psychiatry, reflecting a diversity of policy and practice from countries around the world, with a focus on complementary digital content, including videos and podcasts. 

Mission 

The mission of BJPsych International is to be a publication platform for authors from low- and middle-income countries.

Audience

BJPsych International will help psychiatrists and all mental health professionals to learn about and keep abreast of what is happening in different countries around the world. The journal is Open Access and free for all to read. The print version is sent to all members of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, which includes most psychiatrists working in the UK, and around 3,000 non-UK members.

Ownership and management

The journal is owned and managed by the Royal College of Psychiatrists and published four times a year by Cambridge University Press on behalf of the College. The College grants editorial freedom and independence to the Editor-in-Chief of BJPsych International.

Revenue sources

Both the Royal College of Psychiatrists and Cambridge University Press are not-for-profit organisations, committed to fulfilling their respective objectives of securing the best outcomes for people with mental illness, learning difficulties and developmental disorders and advancing learning, knowledge and research worldwide.

The journal is Open Access online. From 2026, we are moving to a model where the journal can benefit from funding that has been provided by funding bodies and academic institutions for the purpose of supporting open access research. Please see this FAQ for more information.

Press and embargoes

Upon acceptance, BJPsych International articles may be selected for press release by the author's institution, the RCPsych media team (press@rcpsych.ac.uk), or CUP Comms team (cupacademic@cambridge.org). The press release will be distributed under strict embargo, usually with advance access to the full article. Those registered to receive our press releases understand that the embargo is a strict one, and that no information about the article can be published or broadcast until the embargo has lifted. Journalists can contact the authors for comment or further details before the embargo date.

    Dr Adam Hines-Green is a psychiatrist in the NHS in London. Much of his artistic practice relates to psychiatry as a profession. He is the Artist in Residence at the Royal College of Psychiatrists in London until 2028, which is a role offered to a member of the College for a five-year term. The aim of the role is to foster connections and develop projects between the arts, mental health, and those working in these fields.

    Country Clinic is one of a series of drawings based on photographs of toy architectural models being sold on eBay. This particular model is the Sylvanian Families ‘Country Clinic’. When new, “this set also comes with everything you would expect to find in a doctor’s practice, including a reception desk and plenty of reading material, an outfit for your very own Sylvanian Doctor, and all the examination instruments they might need including a stethoscope, scales and clipboard”. Sylvanian Families do not produce a psychiatric hospital model.
