The jack pine tip beetle, Conophthorus banksianae McPherson (Coleoptera: Scolytidae), has been distinguished from its sibling species, C. resinosae Hopkins, partly because immature stages were present in the field longer and because it may be bivoltine. A life history study of the tip beetle revealed it is univoitine, overwintering as an adult. The developmental period of C. banksianae from eggs to adults is about the same as that for C. resinosae. As in C. resinosae, adult C. banksianae usually mate in the spring, but some mate the previous fall. Mating occurs on or in the host. Female-biased sex ratios are found consistently throughout the life cycle of C. banksianae and in overwintering adults of C. resinosae. In Ontario, oviposition galleries are initiated in the old shoots until mid-June, thereafter in new shoots. Peak oviposition is completed before new shoots have fully elongated. The very similar life history traits of C. banksianae and C. resinosae suggest the species are closely related, if not the same species as recently proposed.

I have never seen this species, and give the substance of the very detailed description of Mr. Lucas.

The fact that the petiole of the nest of P. annularis is thickened from time to time as the weight of the nest increases shows that the wasps can adapt their behavior to the needs of the day, even though their chain of work is interrupted. The first part of the nest to be made is the petiole; this is made by the queen long before the first workers emerge.

A general requirement of most biological research laboratories is suitable compact storage space for microscope slides. This is particularly true where space is required for storing deeper preparations such as whole mounts in a horizontal plane with their identification labels in full view. Of the many commercial cabinets now available few appear to be entirely satisfactory. Although some are constructed to hold the slides horizontally, in these the slide holders are in the form of trays with a capacity of not more than one dozen slides and the trays are carried in grooves nne above the other. In others, thin drawers are used in which the slides are laid side bv side on the bottom. In the former, considerable handling is required to expose the labels of the slides. In the latter, slides easily become disarranged, and are exposed to an accumulation of dust; and though considerable space is required, the capacity of the drawers in most cases is limited to less than 100 slides. A cabinet in which a number of desirable features is incorporated has recently been developed at this laboratory, and a description of it constitutes the basis of the present paper.

Five new species of Megapenthes are described: apacheorum from Arizona and New Mexico; texanus from Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona; fuscus from Arizona; antennatus from Arizona and Durango (Mexico); and elongatus from Arizona and New Mexico. Four species are redescribed: longicornis Schaeffer, variolatus Van Dyke, megalops Van Dyke, and obtusus Van Dyke. The male genitalia of these species are illustrated, and a key to the 29 nearctic species is included. The position of aterrimus Motschulsky is discussed, Dolopiosomus Motschulsky is considered as a nomen oblitum under Megapenthes, and caprella californicus Brown is synonymized under caprella LeConte.

During the last seven years, larvae representing more than a dozen species of the genus Eupithecia have been received by the Forest Insect Survey of Canada. With the hope that some of these larvae may be recognized more readily, two species are described herewith; additional notes are given on three species already described, and a key for the separation of mature larvae of these five species is presented at the end of this article.

Ochyria designata, Pack.

Mature larva, five specimens.—Head roundish, flattened, as wide as the first segment, yellowish green ; jaws brown. Body thickest at the 9th segment, attenuated anteriorly; yellowish green, the dorsal and subdorsal spaces reticulated and lined with brown ; a narrow stigmatal brown line and a dorsal row of triangular brown spots, one each on the 4th, 9th and 10th segments, and two on each of the intermediate ones; a minute substigmatal black spot on the anterior part of each segment from the 6th to 9th.

Working over some neglected material, I found, to my surprise, that the specimens of Ochodœus colleted by me last year in Arizona are separable into three distinct species, none of which agree with the descriptions of the North American species. A few years ago my brother sent me from California, with some other material, two specimens of what I take to be an Ochadœus. Unfortunately, I misplaced one of the specimens, and not wishing to dissect the single remaining one, I leave this species in this genus for the present, till more material is available.

A new species, Hypolithus pallidus, from Nevada, California, and Arizona is described and illustrated. This species is not closely related to any other in the genus.

Effects of an operational application of Dimilin® on non-target insects were evaluated in eastern West Virginia in 1988 and 1989. Dimilin was applied in 1988 (70,75 g AI per ha). Insects were collected by light-traps at seven pairs of Dimilin-treated and control sites. Lepidoptera experienced the greatest impact, displaying reduced abundance and species richness at treated sites. No effects were observed among Coleoptera, Diptera, or Hymenoptera.
