Trust, Economic Development and Attitudes toward Immigration

Abstract

We examine (1) how trust in foreigners and trust in political institutions affect attitudes toward immigration and (2) the moderating effect of economic development on those impacts, analyzing data from the fifth wave of the World Values Survey. We find that natives who trust foreigners are more tolerant toward immigration and that economic development positively moderates the impact of trust in foreigners on the attitudes. Meanwhile, we find only mixed evidence for the impact of trust in political institutions and the moderating role of economic development in the impact. We conclude by discussing the implications of the findings.

Résumé

Partant de l'analyse des données de la cinquième vague de l'Enquête mondiale sur les valeurs, nous examinons (1) comment la confiance dans les étrangers et la confiance dans les institutions politiques influencent les attitudes envers l'immigration et (2) l'effet modérateur qu'exerce le développement économique sur ces impacts. Nous observons que les natifs qui font confiance aux étrangers sont plus tolérants à l’égard de l'immigration et que le développement économique atténue positivement l'impact de la confiance dans les étrangers sur les attitudes. En même temps, le constat est moins manifeste en ce qui a trait à l'impact de la confiance dans les institutions politiques et le rôle modérateur du développement économique sur cet impact. Nous concluons en traitant des répercussions de nos constatations.
