Cambridge University Press is looking to appoint a part-time freelance managing editor to assist the editors of Contemporary European History. This individual will work with an engaged and busy editorial team, playing a central role in the publication of one of the world’s leading European history journals.
The managing editor will serve as the primary point of contact and guidance for authors and will support the Editors in managing the submission and review of articles.
The ideal candidate will have a PhD in History (desired but not required) and a native or near-native command of English. Preference may be given to candidates with research expertise in the history of 20th or 21st century Europe. Familiarity with online peer review systems such as ScholarOne or experience working in some capacity with a scholarly publication would be an advantage.
The Managing Editor’s responsibilities will include:
- Administrative processing of articles and reviews; distributing new submissions to the editors; managing ongoing correspondence between editors, authors and reviewers; and tracking submissions and resubmissions.
- Acting as the first point of contact for the journal; responding to enquiries; logging submissions and maintaining the accuracy of database information and instructions for contributors.
- Identifying possible issues of concern in the editorial pipeline and working towards refining and implementing new workflows with editors.
- Attending and taking minutes at virtual monthly editorial meetings.
- Assisting in the management of the journal’s academic Editorial Board, including helping to organize and take minutes for the annual board meeting.
- Working with the social media and marketing assistant to improve the journal’s online visibility.
- The managing editor will not be required to make editorial decisions (eg., acceptance or rejection of manuscripts) but may make recommendations based on their expertise.
The managing editor will work remotely on a freelance basis and will be paid monthly at a rate of £18/hr up to a maximum of 300 hours per year = £5,400
