Abstract

In this review we examinefactors hypothesized to affect children's memory for traumatic events. Theoretical ideas onthe processing and remembering of trauma are presented and critiqued. We review research onhow psychopathology may generally influence and dissociation and posttraumatic stress disordermay specifically influence children's memory and suggestibility. The special case of childmaltreatment is addressed as it relates to interviewing children about traumatic life experiences.Throughout we draw on current developmental, cognitive, social, and clinical theory andresearch. The review covers a controversial and exciting area of psychological inquiry.
