He is author of Games Colleges Play: Scandal and Reform in Intercollegiate Athletics (Baltimore, MD: Johns Hopkins University Press, 1994) and was a charter member of the NCAA's Research Advisory Board (2008–2010). In 1991 and 2010 he provided expert testimony to the Knight Foundation Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics.
