Open access information for Journal of Glaciology and Annals of Glaciology

The launch of the partnership between the International Glaciological Society (IGS) and Cambridge University Press coincides with the IGS journals becoming fully Gold Open Access (OA).

All articles published in the 2016 volumes of the Journal of Glaciology and Annals of Glaciology and thereafter will be published on an OA basis. Articles will be made freely and permanently accessible online, immediately upon publication, under licensing that allows anyone to redistribute, re-use and adapt the content as long as they provide attribution.

Copyright information

Please visit this page for more information on the IGS copyright policy regarding content published before 2016.

Article processing charges

The costs of publication (coordination of peer review, copy-editing and typesetting, hosting and dissemination) for OA publishing are covered by an article processing charge (APC) that is typically met by the author’s funding body or institution

The APCs for Journal of Glaciology and Annals of Glaciology are:

  • Non-IGS members: ££1,360/$1,815 for an Article; £680/$910 for a Letter; £310/$425 for a Communication
  • IGS members: £1,225/$1,640 for an Article; £615/$820 for a Letter; £279/$385 for a Communication

Waivers and discounts are provided to authors from low- and middle-income countries, based on the World Bank list. View a list of countries eligible for an OA publication fee waiver.

The payment process is handled by Copyright Clearance Centre (Rightslink) on our behalf. Read more on our Production FAQs about how the payment process works.

Licensing and Copyright

Articles will be published under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY) licence as standard, but authors may elect to publish under the following alternative licences:

  • CC-BY-NC-SA (Attribution - Non-Commercial - Share Alike)
  • CC-BY-NC-ND (Attribution - Non-Commercial - No Derivatives)

For information on what each licence allows, please visit

A licence-to-publish agreement must be executed before an article can be published (see these licenses for Journal of Glaciology and Annals of Glaciology). Authors retain copyright in the published paper, but license it to the IGS. Authors are responsible for obtaining written permission from the copyright owners (authors, editors, or publisher) to reprint or adapt any previously published material. These permissions must be provided before an accepted paper can be published. Obtaining them can be time-consuming and it is prudent to begin the process as soon as practical.

For more information about OA, see Cambridge University Press’s open access policies pages.
