Abstract

This paper studies the linear dispersion properties of ion temperature anisotropy instabilities in an infinite, homogeneous Vlasov plasma containing a second, cooler-ion component. The cooler component enhances the T>T firehose instability, as well as the T>T, ion-cyclotron instability, by making the waves more resonant with the ions. The effect of various parameters on this enhancement is studied numerically.
