Deadline: 15 September 2023
Language and Cognition (L&C) is a venue for the publication of high-quality empirical research focusing on the interface between language and cognition. It is open to research from the full range of subject disciplines, theoretical backgrounds, and analytical frameworks that populate linguistics and the cognitive sciences. We aim to cover a wide range of interdisciplinary research focused on theoretical issues surrounding the language system.
In addition to the traditional areas of cognitive linguistics (e.g., construction grammar, metaphor theory, linguistic relativity, sensorimotor simulation), we especially welcome research which considers theoretical linguistic questions within a broader cognitive context. We also strongly encourage submissions investigating iconicity, multimodality, signed languages, gesture, or language evolution. We consider human language from a multimodal perspective, including research on either verbal or visual aspects of language, or a combination thereof. We generally do not consider applied work, such as classroom-based research, or studies focused on education, language aptitude or language teaching.
L&C is the official journal of the UK Cognitive Linguistics Association.
L&C is looking for a new Editor-in-Chief to replace the outgoing Editor-in-Chief, Dr Bodo Winter, who will remain in post until the end of 2023.
The editorial responsibilities of the Editor-in-Chief will include:
The Editor-in-Chief is assisted by a Managing Editor who manages assignments of papers to General Editors. The Managing Editor also assists by doing a first pass of desk rejects in relation to papers that are not anonymized, do not contain open data, or that are obviously not a thematic fit with the journal. In the past, the Editor-in-Chief also acted as General Editor (handling an equal number of papers than other members of the team), and we would hope that the incoming Editor-in-Chief continues this tradition. For any questions about expected workload or anything else in relation to the journal, please feel free to contact the current Editor-in-Chief (b.winter@bham.ac.uk).
L&C is keen on increasing the diversity of identities represented by our team.
We particularly welcome candidates who are invested in improving equality, diversity, and inclusion. In addition, we are particularly keen on candidates who are advocates for open science.
It is a common misconception that Editors-in-Chief must be at very senior stages of their career. In contrast to this, we are open to receiving self-nominations from researchers at different career stages. More so than seniority, what matters to the team of Language & Cognition is a willingness to take stewardship of the journal, as well as a sense of nurturing the scientific community via fair, open, and reliable editorial processes and policies.
The Editor-in-Chief will receive annual honorarium of £5,000.
Cambridge will also reimburse reasonable pre-agreed expenses for journal-related activities (e.g., conference attendance).
The Editor-in-Chief is supported by a Managing Editor and a team of General Editors sharing responsibility for the journal's peer review process.
To be considered for this position, please send your CV and a brief cover letter (maximum 500 words) to Jess Miorini (jessica.miorini@cambridge.org).
Self-nominations are open to both internal (i.e., current L&C Editorial Board members or General Editors) and external candidates.
Candidates should include the information below in their cover letter:
The deadline for self-nominations is now been extended to 15th September 2023.
For any questions about the role or the application process, please get in touch with the L&C Publisher at Cambridge University Press: Jess Miorini (jessica.miorini@cambridge.org).
