In a recent article, J. Gibson has re-opened the question of Jesus' refusal to give a sign.1 His conclusion that such a sign would be an apocalyptic and triumphalist embodiment of the mighty act of God on behalf of Israel raises the question as to whether a general or specific sign was expected:

Im allgemeinen wird eine genealogische Gesamtdarstellung der neutestamentlichen Überlieferung (natürlich jeweils für eine Schrift oder Schriftengruppe) wegen ihrer hochgradigen Kontamination und der groβen Anzahl der Zeugen für unmöglich gehalten. Ich möchte hier einige Überlegungen anstellen, in welchem Sinne und unter welchen Bedingungen eine Genealogie und eine entsprechende stemmatische Darstellung möglich ist. Dazu kann ich hier nur in Grundzügen und in vereinfachter Form eine neue Methode vorstellen.

In den vergangenen beiden Dezennien hat, wenn ich recht sehe, die Diskussion darüber, welcher literarischen Gattung das lukanische Geschichtswerk bzw. die Apostelgeschichte zuzurechnen seien, an Intensität zugenommen. Meist ging man davon aus, daß das lukanische Werk, besonders aber die Apostelgeschichte, in den Kontext der antiken Geschichtsschreibung gestellt werden müss-ten, etwa, indem man das Gesamtwerk als ‘popular “general history” written by an amateur Hellenistic historian with credentials in Greek rhetoric’ definierte oder die Apostelgeschichte als historische Monographie klassifizierte, ähnlich den Werken Sallusts und entsprechend dem von Cicero, Ep. ad fam. V 12.2–3 vorgetragenen Programm. Dieser Konsens – wenn er denn wirklich je bestanden haben sollte – wurde dann aber durchbrochen, zunächst von Charles H. Talbert, der das Doppelwerk in den Kontext der Biographie, insbesondere der Philosophenbiographie, stellen wollte, und neuerdings hat man wieder einmal gemeint, die Apostelgeschichte in die Nähe der apokryphen Akten rücken und in ihr so etwas wie einen historischen Roman entdecken zu sollen.

The passage Romans 5.12–21 has long been a crux interpretum, and especially v. 12 in that passage.

It is evident to any serious student of the Fourth Gospel that its treatment of the Christian sacrament of the Eucharist is anomalous. The meaning of John 6.51b-58 is decidedly, even stridently, eucharistic. Yet, despite such obvious eucharistic intent, there is no Johannine account of the eucharistic institution such as we find in 1 Cor 11.23–5 and the later Synoptic accounts of the Last Supper (Mark 14.22–5; Matt 26.26–9; Luke 22.3–6).

As a supplement to the careful analysis of early Christian texts, anyone studying the historical Jesus of Nazareth is inevitably drawn to make comparisons between him and other figures from the ancient world in general, and first-century Palestine in particular. Just what type of figure was he? For example, in his book, Jesus the Jew, Geza Vermes emphasizes Jesus' compatibility with the category of Jewish charismatic figures like Honi the Circle-drawer (perhaps a Galilean) and Hanina Ben-Dosa (definitely a Galilean). Morton Smith compares the actions and words of Jesus to the magical papyri and finds remarkable similarities to ancient magicians, thus the title of his book, Jesus the Magician. Smith, like Celsus 1800 years earlier, delights in showing how Jesus was just one of the many fakers and charlatans practising the magical arts in the first-century Mediterranean world. More recently, Burton Mack has argued that Jesus was a cynic sage like those found in Diogenes Laertius' Lives of Eminent Philosophers. In Mack's reconstruction, Jesus' thought was not eschatological, nor did Jesus intend to found a movement or movements devoted to himself; rather, he preached the flaunting of social conventions and criticized his culture in general terms, like other cynic philosophers.

In his commentary on the Gospel of Luke, published in 1969, Professor H. Schürmann said in relation to the exegesis of the passage of the transfiguration ‘Die “literarische Art” der Erzählung, die in ihr verwandten – und in den verschiedenen Traditionen sich wandelnden – Weisen des Denkens, Sprechens und Erzählens sind keineswegs genügend erforscht, um mit verläβlichem Urteil Geschehnis und Aussageweise im einzelnen sondieren zu können.’ Twenty years later, Professor F. Bovon states basically the same in relation to the pericope: ‘Leider fehlt noch eine gründliche Monographie darüber, so daβ der Ursprung wie die Gattungen unbestimmt bleiben.’ However, in this respect, research on the OT tradition, both biblical and non-biblical, has made important contributions which have opened up new methodological paths to the interpretation in order to make progress in the literary and theological understanding of the NT text.

In a provocative article on misunderstandings about the early history and significance of synagogues, H. C. Kee makes the following comment.

Le caractère littéraire du chapitre septième de l'évangile de Jean est au premier abord assez déconcertant, car il abonde en répétitions, incohérences, voire même en contradictions: bref, le texte est hérissé d'apories. L'ancienne critique littéraire johannique, au début du siècle, a baissé les bras devant les difficultés de la tâche qu'elle s'était donnée: retrouver et reconstruire la forme la plus ancienne de l'évangile de Jean. J. Wellhausen, en 1908, faisait remarquer à propos de Jn 7.14–8.59: ‘On ne peut pas découvrir un fil conducteur, un progrès. C'est toujours la même chose qui est répétée dans quantité de variantes, et l'on n'avance pas d'un pouce.’ E. Schwartz, de son côté, se résignait: les chapitres 7 à 10 sont pour lui ‘un méli-mélo sans sens’, ‘et il est impossible de découvrir les motifs qui relieraient les différentes scènes’. Et par après, de R. Bultmann à M.-É. Boismard, ciseaux et pots de colle en mains, on a découpé et reconstitue le texte, allant même parfois jusqu'à ne déplacer qu'un seul verset, voire un demiverset.

Paul's autobiographical notes in Gal 1.11–2.21 have long attracted considerable attention because of their rather sensational portrayal. The dramatic picture of a stubbornly independent Paul marching determinedly into the Jewish capital to ‘have it out’ with the Jerusalem apostles, or the spectacle of two great church leaders raising the dust in Antioch certainly excites the imagination. Yet the work of the exegete begins not with the reconstruction of the events themselves, but with the question of the literary purpose behind Paul's tendentious representation of the facts. And it is to this end that we would like to re-examine briefly the Pauline narrative.

The death of Colin Hemer in 1987 has deprived the fellowship of New Testament scholars of one who, like his late mentor F. F. Bruce, was able to bring to bear on the study of the text of the New Testament the insights and discipline of one trained in the Classics. Hemer's posthumously published The Book of Acts in the Setting of Hellenistic History is an attempt on a large scale to argue the case for the historicity of Acts with respect to attention to matters of detail, and, as a consequence, the trustworthiness of its author. Luke the historian, contends Hemer, deserves to be judged according to the historiographical conventions of his day, the conventions of a venerable historiographical heritage whose great exemplar in the Hellenistic era was Polybius. Hemer's bringing of a vast collection of epigraphical and archaeological evidence to bear on the question of Lukan historicity should shake the presuppositions and conclusions of the sceptical and help NT scholars to appreciate both Lukan accuracy and Acts' ‘topicality’.

1) In the exegetical discussion the word ‘temple-criticism’ is capable of several meanings. Generally speaking it is used to characterize critical statements in the New Testament concerning the Jerusalem temple. It is for example applied to sayings which express the view that the Jewish temple has been superseded by the coming of Jesus (Matt 12.6; John 2.19). Further, the word can signify a critical attitude towards the temple, when it is in a state of abuse (Mark 11.17; Matt 21.12). It also stands for a supposed criticism of the temple, taken as a static entirety and contrasted with the mobile tabernacle (Hebrews and Acts 7). Finally it is used to label certain New Testament statements and conceptions, understood as proclaiming a fundamental rejection of the temple, a rejection in principle of the temple as such (Acts 7.46–7). In discussing our theme we have to take all these aspects into consideration.

In der Einleitung meiner 1985 im wesentlichen abgeschlossenen Studie zur Versöhnung habe ich vermerkt, daβ ich mich nicht in eine Auseinandersetzung um eine Biblische Theologie begeben mösondern lediglich die Frage nach der Eignung des paulinischen Versöhnungsbegriffes (καταλλαγή) als Leitmotiv einer Biblischen Theologie aufwerfen möchte. Auch hier möchte ich nichts anderes. Somit beschränke ich mich auf Paulus und gehe nur auf einige Neuerscheinungen ein.

There has been in recent years an upsurge of interest in the social description of early Christianity, particularly in the reconstruction of its ‘social world’. Any valid sociological analysis of early Christianity of necessity depends upon the exacting interpretation of the NT texts, since these constitute the necessary data for such studies. In many cases such exegetical ground-work has been done thoroughly and well, so that fruitful social studies can be conducted on the basis of the resulting data. Unfortunately, in the case of early Christian disciplinary practices, relatively little careful research has been done, and much of what has been done is, in the opinion of the present writer, seriously flawed. Social descriptions based upon this data are inevitably likewise flawed, and a distorted picture of early Christian communal life is the unfortunate result. The nature of early Christian discipline is obviously a problem of a social nature, but before serious sociological studies can be done, there must be a correction of the distortions which are currently prevalent in the scholarly consensus regarding this subject.

The earliest witness to a Latin version of Acts is found in the citations of the African church father, Tertullian. This means that the Latin version of this book probably originated in the latter part of the second century. The exact date and place of its origin are, however, obscure. A revision during the early part of the third century resulted in the first identifiable text-type of this version, the African text (K), witnessed to by Cyprian, the Fleury Palimpsest (55, h) and two writings by Augustine.

Herr Prof. Dr Cilliers Breytenbach hat im ersten Referat unseres Seminars die Frage nach den neutestamentlichen Sühneaussagen vor allem aus traditionsgeschichtlicher Sicht behandelt. Um in unseren diesjährigen Seminarsitzungen die Sühnethematik aus unterschiedlicher Sicht in den Blick zu bekommen, möchte ich heute ihre hermeneutische Problematik darlegen. Um mich darauf konzentrieren zu können, verzichte ich weithin auf die Explikation exegetischer Detailfragen. Die neutestamentlichen Aussagen über den ‘stellvertretenden Sühnetod Christi’ – diese Formulierung ist freilich die unserer theologischen Fachsprache, nicht die des Neuen Testaments – werden nicht nur auβerhalb des Christentums als unakzeptabel angesehen; auch innerhalb der Zunft der Theologen werden sie problematisiert. So werden sie z.B. von Rudolf Bultmann als nur ‘eine Gruppe’ von paulinischen Aussagen über das Heilsgeschehen beurteilt. Paulus bediene sich, um den Sinn dieses Heilsgeschehens zu beschreiben, ‘einer Reihe von Begriffen, die aus verschiedenen Anschauungskreisen stammen’. Die Aussagen über Jesu Tod als Sühnopfer sind danach eben jene Gruppe von Aussagen, ‘in denen der Tod Jesu in der Begrifflichkeit jüdischer Kultusanschauung, und d.h. zugleich des diese Anschauung bestimmenden juristischen Denkens’ verstanden wird. Damit sind zunächst einmal die paulinischen Sühneaussagen relativiert, eingeebnet unter konkurrierenden Vorstellungen. Mehr noch: Wenn von der Begrifflichkeit jüdischer Kultanschauung die Rede ist, dann ist die Intention vieler Autoren unverkennbar, das Moment des Überholten herauszustellen. Und in der Tat ist ja das in Christus von Gott gewirkte Heilsereignis weder ein kultisches Geschehen noch ist es auf das jüdische Volk eingeschränkt. Erst recht läβt es sich nicht in das Prokrustesbett juristischen Denkens zwingen. Die eigentliche Ablehnung der Vorstellung vom stellvertretenden Sühnetod Christi beruht aber gar nicht so sehr, sofern man Bultmanns Analyse folgt, auf einem exegetischen Sachverhalt, sondern resultiert vor allem aus einer modernen Plausibilität: Der Tod ist ein unvertretbares Geschehen; jeder stirbt seinen eigenen, seinen ureigenen Tod. Sterben und Tod sind nicht delegierbar. Martin Heidegger hat es auf den phänomenologischen Punkt gebracht: ‘Der Tod als Ende des Daseins ist die eigenste, unbezügliche, gewisse und als solche unbestimmte, unüberholbare Möglichkeit des Daseins.’ Ist aber der Tod in diesem Sinne ontologisch durch Jemeinigkeit konstituiert, so gilt: ‘Keiner kann dem Anderen sein Sterben abnehmen. Jemand kann wohl “für einen Anderen in den Tod gehen”. Das besagt jedoch immer; für den Anderen sich opfern “in einer bestimmten Sache”. Solches Sterben für … kann aber nie bedeuten, daβ dem Anderen damit sein Tod im geringsten abgenommen sei. Das Sterben muβ jedes Dasein jeweilig selbst auf sich nehmen. Der Tod ist, sofern er “ist”, wesensmäβig je der meine.’

Compared with that of classic Pauline texts, the history of exegesis of 1 Cor 6.1–11 is modest. Still, the fact that this text has not been studied much does not render it problem-free. On the contrary, it continues to elude an easy interpretation. The standard treatment discusses the integrity of these eleven verses, looks at their placement within the context of chapters 5 and 6, and attempts to explain whether and how Paul envisioned Christians settling their legal disputes. Little attention, however, has been given to the social situation of the community that may have occasioned Paul's remarks about lawsuits in Corinth. This study examines that social situation on the premise that Paul sees the problem of lawsuits on two levels. One looks to the community's relationship to the outside world. The other looks to the community's internal life, where Paul understands the litigiousness of some Christians to be part of the larger problem of social division in the Corinthian churches.

The interpretation of 1 Cor 12.31–13.13 is thwarted by three problems. The most important obstacle is the obscurity of the genre to which this passage belongs, added to which are two minor riddles. The question of the function and meaning of the exhortation: ‘Zealously strive for the greatest gifts’ (12.31) as well as of the clause: ‘that I might boast’ (13.3) has not, as yet, been answered convincingly.

In diesem Beitrag möchte ich einige Beobachtungen zu Apg 14.11–17 ausführen, die sich in drei Thesen zusammenfassen lassen:

Erstens soil anhand der Terminologie dieser Perikope aufgezeigt werden wie der Autor dieses Textabschnittes und somit derjenige der lukanischen Apostelgeschichte auf Vorstellungen zurückgreift, die aus den Überlieferungstraditionen des griechisch-sprechenden Judentums stammen. Diese Einsicht ist nicht neu, liefert aber die Voraussetzung für den zweiten, weitergehenden Diskussionspunkt: Der Text Apg 14.11–13,17 läβt einige religiöse Vorstellungen anklingen, die im südlichen Kleinasien während des ersten nachchristlichen Jahrhunderts verbreitet waren. Daraus läβt sich drittens die These entwickeln, daβ der Autor der Apostelgeschichte solche lokalen religiösen Vorstellungen im Lichte der Tradition des griechisch-sprechenden Judentums einbezieht.
