It will come as a surprise to some readers that monkeys were contemporaries of prehistoric man in Europe north of the Alps. Finds are few, yet sufficient to make this statement and also to say that they belonged to the genus Macaca, of which the modern “Gibraltar Ape” is a member.

For any one interested in birds and beasts, an expedition to the Murchison Falls in Uganda is a truly thrilling experience. On either side of the Victoria Nile, from. Lake Albert to the Falls, is the Bunyoro and Gulu game reserve where, from a boat going up and down the river, one can see an amazing number and variety of African fauna. It is a perfect example of the intense pleasure to be had from watching wild animals in a place where they can live undisturbed by man.

The Kruger National Park, together with the less known national parks of the Union of South Africa, is governed by a Board of ten unpaid Trustees, ultimately responsible to the Minister of Lands. This Board maintains a considerable bureaucratic staff under a paid secretary, with offices in Pretoria. Attached to it are various salaried scientific experts, zoologists, botanists, and others, with such personal staffs as may be found necessary.

The National Audubon Society of New York has been much concerned with the survival of the American flamingo (Phœnicopterus ruber). It has therefore appointed Mr. Robert P. Allen, a Research Associate, to make a complete survey of the status of this flamingo and to co-operate in its protection with individual organizations and governments in the countries concerned.

During 1950 and early 1951 I was fortunate enough to be able to study and observe the state of wild life in South Ethiopia, a privilege that few Europeans can claim in recent years. The area concerned lies north of the Kenya border and stretches from Lake Rudolf in the west, eastwards some 500 miles to Dolo and beyond into the Bale-Ogaden territory, including the Provincesof Sidamo-Borana and Gamu-Gofa (but excluding North Sidamo and the Omo River).

The Game Department came into being on the 1st April, 1950. Throughout the year work was confined to the Northern Territories of the Gold Coast.

To those unaware of the position in the Gold Coast the first reaction to the above report is probably one of satisfaction that a game department has at last been established and that work has started, but a careful examination of the report raises a number of doubts as to the value of the work that has been done. It is perhaps worth while commenting on the Report in the light of personal knowledge, and after detailed discussion with other officers interested in game, who know the areas concerned.

With the reduction in poaching the game in the reserve is much less wild than it used to be, and visitors to the Murchison Falls are seeing more of it than previously. The animals seen on the Nile boat trip, however, give a completely false idea of the numbers of the various species that are actually present in the reserve. They tend to crowd into the river valley where they are attracted by the water and good grazing. Away from the river comparatively little game is seen.
