We are honored to give the article "How Much Should We Trust Instrumental Variable Estimates in Political Science? Practical Advice Based on 67 Replicated Studies" by co-authors Apoorva Lal, Mackenzie Lockhart, Yiqing Xu, and Ziwen Zu the Editor's Choice Award for all articles appearing in the journal Political Analysis in 2024.
This article is a tour de force, as it provides a comprehensive examination of the usage of instrumental variables (IV) in top political science journals in the period between 2010 and 2022. The authors' data comes from a remarkable 67 replicated studies which used instrumental variables. Their analyses are creative and eye-opening, even as their results are sobering. Lal and co-authors find that traditional F-tests can mask weak instruments, and that traditional statistics can sometimes understate the uncertainty surrounding estimates from Two-Stage Least Squares. By examining the ratio between OLS and IV estimates, they identify a worrisome trend, with the estimates using instrumental variables frequently larger than the OLS estimates whose biases they are designed to correct. This article will influence and doubtless improve political scientists' use of instrumental variables, and it reflects a remarkable far-reaching effort and time-intensive to leverage existing data through the re-analysis of data from published articles.
