ZnGa2Te4 was found to crystallize in a defect tetrahedral structure with possible space group I4(82) with Z=2. Complete X-ray powder diffraction data were obtained and the unit cell parameters a and c and X-ray density were calculated. These were a=0.5930(1) nm, c=1.1859(3) nm, and Dx=5.7×103 kg/m3.

All known occurrences of nickelphosphide (Ni,Fe)3P—a mineral encountered mainly in meteoritic irons—represent relatively small grains, which prevents acquiring powder data of a reasonable quality. Synthetic analogues of this mineral, corresponding chemically to that found in the meteorite Vicenice, have been synthesized. Powder data collected using a standard laboratory diffractometer in the Bragg–Brentano geometry are presented. The space group of nickelphosphide is identical to that of schreibersite (Fe,Ni,Co)3P and synthetic Ni3P—I4. The unit-cell dimensions refined from the powder data are a=9.0168(1) Å, c=4.4501(1) Å, and V=361.80(1) Å3, with Z=8.

The compound Ba4Eu3F17 was prepared by heating pre-dried BaF2 and EuF3 (4:3) at 800 °C for 8 h in static vacuum. The colorless polycrystalline product obtained was characterized by Rietveld refinement of the observed powder diffraction data with a starting model of Ba4Y3F17. The title compound Ba4Eu3F17 crystallizes in rhombohedral lattice with lattice parameters, a=11.1787(4) and c=20.5789(10) Å, Z=3 (Space group R 3, No. 148). The Ba4Eu3F17 structure can be described as an ordered anion-rich fluorite type structure with the formation of Eu6F37 clusters. There are two crystallographically distinct Ba (CN=10, 11) and one distinct Eu (CN=8). The typical Ba(1)–F, Ba(2)–F, and Eu–F bond lengths range from 2.56 to 2.83 Å, 2.54 to 3.25 Å, and 2.24 to 2.49 Å, respectively. The salient feature of the structure is that the EuF8 polyhedra share their corner to form a cubo-octahedron of fluoride ions. The cubic BaF8 polyhedra of BaF2 are modified to Ba(1)–F10 and Ba(2)–F11 polyhedra in this structure. The cubo-octahedron encloses extra fluorine F(8) inside it.

In this work we present results of X-ray diffraction using powder method, on natural alexandrite samples from Minas Gerais State (Brazil), as a function of a sequence of annealing. From these measurements we determine lattice parameters before (a=9.405 Å, b=5.471 Å, c=4.409 Å) and after annealing, and its structure is confirmed as orthorhombic. Measurements done after an annealing of 15 minutes at 700 °C and for 5 hours at 1000 °C indicate the migration of atoms present in the sample through different phases, which were also identified by Microprobe Analysis (WDS). However we have verified that such migration does not modify the structure. X-ray diffraction measurements have been carried out in conjunction with optical absorption in the UV–Vis as a function of annealing.

Two compounds have been studied by means of powder diffraction and their unit cell parameters are reported. The monoclinic cell parameters for dimethylgermanyl-bridged bis cyclopentadienyl tetracarbonyl diruthenium are a=11.03(2) Å, b=13.65(2) Å, c=11.609(2) Å, β=105.81(1)°, Z=4, space group P21/n (No. 14), Dx=2.135 mg/m3. The monoclinic cell parameters for λ-dimethylsilyl-dicyclopentadienyl-π, π′-tetracarbonyl diruthenium, are a=11.113(3) Å, b=13.60(1) Å, c=11.674(7) Å, and β=106.00(3)°, Z=4, space group P21/n (No. 14), and Dx=1.946 mg/m3. The cells found for the two compounds are in good agreement with those obtained from single crystal X-ray diffractometry.

The compound Ba4Nd3F17 was prepared by heating predried BaF2 and EuF3 (4:3) at 900 °C for 8 h in static vacuum. The polycrystalline sample obtained was characterized by Rietveld refinement of the observed powder diffraction data with the starting model of Ba4Y3F17. This compound crystallizes in a rhombohedral lattice with unit-cell parameters, a=11.2818(3) and c=20.7788(11) Å, Z=6, (Space group R 3, No. 148). The Rp, Rwp and Rexp factors were 9.5%, 12.9% and 10.9%, respectively.

Magnesiumchromite, MgCr2O4, undergoes a structural transition from a cubic spinel structure [space group Fd3m, a=8.32768(4) Å at 16 K] into a tetragonal distorted structure [space group I41/amd, a=5.89199(5) Å, c=8.31677(8) Å at 10 K], isotypic with Hausmannite, Mn3O4. This phase transition is translationengleich and takes place very close or at the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature.

Five transition metal derivatives of maleic acid with general formula, M2+(C4H3O4−)2⋅4H2O (M2+=Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, and Zn) were prepared by slow evaporation of the aqueous solution at room temperature. Their X-ray powder diffraction patterns were recorded and evaluated. These materials are isostructural and crystallize in a triclinic unit cell. The volume of the cells vary linearly between that of the Ni complex [V=314.65(7) Å3: a=5.1769(8) Å, b=7.317(1) Å, c=9.140(2) Å, α=108.42(2)°, β=104.61(1)°, γ=92.87(1)°] and the volume of the Mn-derivative [V=330.30(8) Å3: a=5.322(1) Å, b=7.375(1) Å, c=9.752(2) Å, α=115.48(2)°, β=106.64(2)°, γ=86.63(2)°].

The two mixed halides of barium, barium chloroiodide and barium bromoiodide, were synthesized via a solid-state reaction route. In this article, their powder XRD data are reported. A careful analysis of the X-ray data shows that both BaClI and BaBrI crystallize in the orthorhombic structure. The lattice parameters obtained are a=17.841±0.003 Å, b=8.441±0.001 Å and c=5.642±0.001 Å for BaClI (SG. Pbam, No. 55) and a=13.667±0.002 Å, b=12.012±0.001 Å and c=10.871±0.002 Å for BaBrI (SG. P2221 No. 17).

The crystal structure of a series of substituted sulfonylureas were studied in this paper by means of powder diffraction, and the cell dimensions of each compound were refined by a least squares analysis. The cell parameters were in good agreement with those obtained from single crystal data. © 2002 International Centre for Diffraction Data.

Synthetic analogues of the minerals natisite and for the first time of paranatisite were prepared hydrothermally at 200 °C in the system Na2O–TiO2–SiO2–H2O. The obtained powder x-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns were interpreted by the Powder Data Interpretation (PDI) software package. As a result improved indexing and unit cell parameters refinements of these two phases were achieved. Synthetic natisite is tetragonal, space group—P4/nmm, a=0.649 67(8) nm, c=0.508 45(11) nm, V=0.214 50(10) nm3, Z=2, Dcal=3.13 g.cm−1, F30=37.48, M20=52.79. Synthetic paranatisite is orthorhombic, space group—Pmma, a=0.983 86(29) nm, b=0.919 23(19) nm, c=0.481 84(12) nm, V=0.435 78(19) nm3, Z=1, Dcal=3.01 g.cm−1, F30=16.42, M20=29.21.

The crystal structures of two manganese hexacyanometallates(II), Mn2[Fe(CN)6].8H2O and Mn2[Os(CN)6].8H2O, were refined from X-ray powder diffraction data using the Rietveld method, with the reported structure for Mn2[Ru(CN)6].8H2O used as a structural model. These compounds are isomorphous and crystallize in the monoclinic space group P21/n. Their crystallization water is not firmly bound and can be removed without disrupting the M–C≡N–Mn network. In the dehydrated complexes, the outer cation (Mn) remains linked to only three N atoms from CN ligands while the inner cation (Fe,Os) preserves its coordination sphere. The IR, Raman, and Mössbauer spectra for the hydrated and anhydrous forms are explained based on the refined structures.

Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) data were collected for La0.65Sr0.35MnO3 prepared through an alternative method from a stoichiometric mixture of Mn2O3, La2O3, and SrO2, fired at 1300 °C for 16 h. XRD analysis using the Rietveld method was carried out and it was found that manganite has rhombohedral symmetry (space group R3c). The lattice parameters are found to be a=5.5032 Å and c=13.3674 Å. The bond valence computation indicates that the initial inclusion of Sr occurs at higher temperature.

In order to better characterize metal soaps found in paint films or on metal surfaces, several metal soaps were synthesized and their X-ray powder diffraction patterns measured. Metal soaps were obtained from four different fatty acids found in drying oils, two saturated (palmitic and stearic acids) and two unsaturated (oleic and linoleic acids), and from copper, zinc, and lead, three metals that are typically found in metal alloys and paint systems. X-ray powder diffraction data are reported for the following compounds: palmitic acid, stearic acid, zinc palmitate, zinc stearate, zinc oleate, zinc linoleate, copper palmitate, copper stearate, copper oleate, lead palmitate, lead stearate, and lead oleate. Features that are characteristic of specific compounds were observed. Soaps obtained from different fatty acids with the same metal ion show differences, as do soaps obtained with the same fatty acid but with different metal ions. Differences were observed when X-ray powder diffraction data obtained for stearic acid and zinc stearate were compared to published data for these two compounds (PDF 38-1923 and 5-0079, respectively). In the case of stearic acid, differences could be explained by the fact that the specimen reported previously in PDF 38-1923 was likely contaminated with palmitic acid. In the case of zinc stearate, low angle data were missing from the original pattern PDF 5-0079 and peaks that were reported in other angular regions in fact consisted in more peaks that were not resolved due to broadening.

A nonlinear optical material, N-(p-methoxy benzoyl)-N′-(p-methyl phenyl) thiourea (C16H16N2O2S), has been characterized by X-ray powder diffraction. Experimental values of 2θ corrected for systematic errors, relative peak intensities, values of d, and the Miller indices of 94 observed reflections with 2θ up to 66° are reported. The powder diffraction data and the figure-of-merit are reported. The least-squares refined unit cell parameters are a=25.3291(3) Å, b=11.9478(1) Å, c=10.1407(4) Å, β=103.10(2)°, V=2988.97(6) Å3, Z=8, Dx=1.335(0) g/cm3, with space group P21(4).

The workshop was aimed at demonstrating the uses and methods of analysis of powder diffraction data collected from X-ray sources. There were around 35 participants in the workshop from Chile, Uruguay, Brazil, and Argentine. The participants came from inorganic and organic chemistry, physics, mineralogy and materials science backgrounds, and additionally we had attendees from a local cement company.

The least-squares refined unit cell parameters are a=26.7079(3) Å, b=6.7995(9) Å, c=19.2845(1) Å, β=121.39(4), V=2989.42(3) Å3, Z=8, Dx=1.334(8) g/cm3, space group P2(3).
